5. La Legendaria región vinícola del Ribera del Duero.

Quinta etapa: 28km, Desde el pueblo medieval de Peñaranda del Duero hasta el monasterio Agustino Santa María de la Viña “La Vid”.

The “Ribera del Duero” is a Spanish protected wine denomination label located in the country´s elevated northern  plateau within the autonomous community of Castille and León.  This particular denomination is found along the younger stretches of the course of the river Duero crossing through the southern plains of the Province of Burgos before it heads west towards Portugal. Wine has been produced in this region for thousands of years, but viticulture as we know it probably arrived in this region thanks to the Benedictine monks who came from the Burgundy region in France in the twelfth century although there is archaeological evidence of wine making in this region dating back 2000 years from the time of the Roman occupation. The Origin Denomination label was created in 1982 by an organization of wine producers and growers who were determined to promote the quality of their wines and enforce regulatory standards. The region has a flat, rocky, gently undulating terrain, ranging from 911 metres to 750 metres above sea level. The Ribera del Duero has a moderate to low rainfall (450mm per year) and is exposed to quite extreme climatic conditions with long dry summers followed by hard winters in which temperatures often go below freezing. These conditions produce strong, richly  flavoured grapes which end up becoming magnificent wines. The Wines produced in the Ribera del Duero derive almost exclusively from red grapes with the majority of the production dedicated to the “Tempranillo” variety. The wine is often complemented but not always with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. The wines produced in the region are long aging with complex vinification procedures, producing intense, extremely long-lived wines emanating from largely limestone soils. The Wines are classified as much for their longevity as their grape quality. The aging requirements are two years with 12 months in oak casks for “Crianza”, Three years with 12 months in oak casks for “Reserva” and 5 years with 24 months in oak casks for “Gran Reserva”.    There are many internationally renowned  wines in the region, the most famous being “Vega Sicilia”, much appreciated by the rich and famous and known to be King Charles´s favorite “Vino”.
